I was taken by ambulance from a cruise ship because of shortness of breath and acute bronchitis. After spending several hours in the ER (which is common anywhere), I was taken to a regular room sometime around 6:00 p.m. My double room was attended by a student nurse; upon arrival at my room, I asked for a glass of ice water. For 3-1/2 hours I continued to ask for water - and did not receive it until becoming as irate and insistent as I was able to be in my medical condition. At that point, I was visited for the first time by the nurse supervising the student and told that my behavior was unacceptable and that they would be happy to cooperate if I would only cooperate with them. This occurred during my first evening there; frankly, the next four days were not much of an improvement. My utmost concern was the lack of sanitation - I will not go into detail, but it was not only lack of cleanliness, but even involved human waste. I truly believe that I was in much more danger there than if I had remained on the ship being attended by the ship doctor.

I have been to this hospital several times in the past but lately it looks a bit run down. The hospital offers typical services of any large hospital like the emergency room, delivery rooms, etc. The hospital is not as beautiful as the North Hawaii Community Hospital but the hospital serves the Hilo community.

I delivered my baby there last year via repeat c-section. I was most displeased that they do not allow VBAC deliveries. My doctor (who regularly delivers there) made me sign a contract before receiving treatment stating that I wouldn't try a VBAC and said it was because the Medical Center is not staffed to handle an emergency c-section if the need should arrive. As for the employees, I was happy with most of my nurses, although the night crew was VERY unfriendly. I was very unimpressed that the hospital didn't give us a temporary parking pass to park close to the hospital when it was time to go in for my c-section--I had to walk across the street from the parking lot, and I wasn't happy about it, especially since I was 9 months pregnant and on bedrest.
