Very much in decline

Posted by Guest G. on 8/13/2009

This is a 1970s-style large cement-slab hotel. We stayed for several nights in March 2009. The staff were VERY nice but there weren't very many of them. Carpets are worn, wallpaper is coming loose, stains in hallway carpet. Elevators frequently were disabled, to the point of there being crowds in the lobby waiting to use the one working elevator. The ruckus from several rooms full of noisy silly party-animal kids on our floor kept us from sleeping well. The decor in the restaurant is depressing. I'd give the helpful hotel employees an A plus for friendliness when you can find them, but I'd give the hotel a C minus to D plus as a place to stay.

better than most

This hotel is one of the best off of Banyan Drive in Hilo, HI. Staff are friendly with plenty of "aloha". Parking is free! Strolling along at night is safe; but use common sense.

Nice property

Great Hotel

This is a nice hotel, a little old but in good condition. The rooms are clean and plain, nothing fancy. The hallways are not well lit but kind of dark. There is a small store and restaurant downstairs but thats about it. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Hilo.

A decent place to stay

While on a one day business trip to the Big Island (Hawaii) I stayed at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. The rate was fair, of course that's the rate Kamaaina (Hawaii residents) pay, I am not sure what mainland travelers would pay. Anyway its close to Hilo town, but quite a ways from the volcano if you want to take a trip there, pretty much your entire day will be shot going and coming back.
