Best small restaurant in Hilo

Posted by jjlasne on 1/31/2009

This restaurant is located in a shopping mall near WalMart. The interior is modern, clean and sophisticated. The food was excellent, the fish was fresh and service was attentive, quick and efficient. Best restaurant in Hilo considering that they are not that many restaurants there; at least that was my impression. I would go back in a heartbeart and enjoy their air conditioning because out in the parking lot is pretty hot!

We love the food at Hilo Bay Cafe'. You have got to try it. Don't let the name or location fool you. We stayed 8 days in Hawaii, 3 days in Hilo and 5 days in Kona. Hilo Bay Cafe' was the best food we had on the entire trip. The chef is outstanding. The food presentation can't be beat. Even the waitstaff was very attentive. I would go back to Hilo just to stop in at Hilo Bay Cafe'.

Delicious food, intriguing design

The crab cake sandwich and the french dip were both delicious--this is a great lunch spot that is nowhere near downtown. Also, take a look around. The place is quietly stunning, with a variety of seating arrangements and styles that look fantastic together.

Hilo Bay Cafe - all organic!

Hilo Bay Cafe is a nice newer cafe in Hilo that offers a menu entirely of organic foods. I ordered the poke and also a Greek dish. It was EXCELLENT. To be honest, I didn't realize that everything was organic until my mother in law pointed it out. I picked the restuarant because the menu had several different-type choices on it. I was pleasantly surprised. The cafe itself is a little trendy and artsy. There is a bar, which looks like it specializes in wine. All the dishes on the menu were very reasonably priced. I would certainly like to go back if I am in Hilo again. This is just one of those places that is different from the norm and that makes it a great find! The service was friendly, although a little slow for my liking. I had to keep reminding myself that I was on vacation in Hilo, which is a nice small town feel and therefore service is more relaxed.
